Another view of the lake. Lake Eyre North and South are connected by a narrow channel. The northern part is about 144 km long and 77 km wide (89x48 miles) and the southern is about 64 km long and 24 km wide (40x15 miles). Together they cover about 9700 square km, making Lake Eyre the world's 18th largest lake. Of course the last time it was full was in 1974, though it has smaller floods of 1 to 2 meters every few years. When it has water in it it's usually saltier than the ocean, and can be nearly ten times as salty as the ocean (the water gets saltier as it evaporates).
