As Route 20 nears the hill, the pavement ends. At first it's a wide gravel road (here), then it narrows to less than 2 lanes and becomes bare dirt (or mud). It may sound like a pretty poor road, but it's impressive that it's there at all. The province said it wasn't feasible to build a road into the valley, so in the 1950's the valley residents got together and built it themselves. Since then the province has maintained it.
