The Geographic South Pole is surveyed each year on January 1. The ice carries the markers away and left from me in this picture by about 10 meters each year. You can see the last two years' markers to the left of the flag. The sign has Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott's names along with their dates of arrival at the Pole and a quote from each of them. The station's official name is Amundsen Scott South Pole Station, in honor of the first two men to reach the Pole.
