The 17th of May is Norway's national holiday, when they celebrate their independence from Sweden and Denmark. They celebrate with parades in every town—and on ice floes in the Arctic. We actually had a preliminary celebration on the 16th that was filmed and sent over the internet to the Norwegian TV channel overnight (it's a slow connection). That way they could show our parade while showing all the others. These photos are from the events on the 17th. The first shows people carrying things down to the ice for the parade and games.

  There was a firing exercise.

And a race in plastic bags, of course.

It was a little chilly, so the barbeque was inside the helicopter hanger.
