One of the things we wanted to measure was how much light gets through the ice to provide heat to the ocean and energy for life under the ice. We were fortunate to have some Coast Guard divers along on the cruise who could take one of our instruments under the ice. They dove from a small boat near the ice edge. These first photos show some of the preparations for their dives. Some movies they made under the ice are here: Movie 1, Movie 2, and Movie 3.

We also measured the amount of light the ice reflects. The light it reflects doesn't get to warm the Earth, but if the ice melts, then the ocean will absorb that light and cause more warming. Here is the basic setup for measuring the reflection, with one instrument measuring the light reaching the surface and one measuring the light reflected. In the following photo Marcel and Sebastian are moving the setup from one place to another.
