A spring in this part of Saline Valley provides enough water for some plants to survive. The salt flats in front of the distant mountains remind you that you are far from out of the desert yet. Despite being about 1000 feet higher than Death Valley, Saline Valley (still inside the park) is surrounded by high mountains on all four sides, instead of just the east and west, allowing it to be as hot as Death Valley.
