Just past this spot, after the long, straight section, the road becomes far
more interesting, and a sign warns of 18 to 20% grades ahead (20% meaning
that, for every 500 feet [meters] you travel, you descend 100 feet [meters],
for comparison, most interstates in the western US don't exceed 10%, and the
Autobahn in Germany is limited to about 4%). I descended this section in
first gear and still needed to use the brakes for the switchbacks. After
descending to the Tuya River, you head straight back up to pass between the
Tahltan and Stikine Rivers.
