Christchurch is proud of its importance to Antarctic expeditions of the past and present. This statue of Scott, leader of the second expedition to reach the South Pole, sits near the center of the city. Scott's last stop before heading for Antarctica was Christchurch. He and the men who went with him to the Pole all died on their return to the coast of Antarctica.
