The small green tents are used for storage. The two larger ones were used by the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA), who drilled an ice core at Dome C that reached down through more than 3200 meters (10,500 feet) of ice. The ice they brought up from the bottom was more than 800,000 years old. By examining the isotopes of oxygen that make up the ice and gases that are trapped in the ice of different ages they can learn about the Earth's atmosphere and climate during the last three quarters of a million years.
