The flat area is sea ice. Much of the ice in the foreground is covered with melt ponds formed when snow and ice melt on the surface of the sea ice. In the background is part of Ross Island, where McMurdo and Scott Base are. About half way between the area covered by the melt ponds and the island, near the middle of the picture you can see an icebreaker working to keep the channel open for the supply ship that was on its way to McMurdo.
