After spending a few days at BTN waiting for the right combination of weather and flight schedules, I left for Dome C on the same Twin Otter that took me from McMurdo to BTN.     The trip started with a beautiful helicopter ride from BTN over a ridge to the skiway where the plane was waiting. After we were on the plane it took off and flew over some exposed mountains before reaching the plateau, where there is nothing but flat snow as far as you can see in every direction. After about two hours, about half way to Dome C, we landed at a remote fuel cache to refuel. Two hours later we landed at Dome C. Because of the location near the pole, where the time zones converge, we crossed through four time zones in a four-hour flight on a slow plane. As a result, we actually landed at Dome C earlier than we left BTN. |
