In the 1980s over 5000 people lived in Dikson. Today, there are a little over 500 people and so there seems to be an apartment building for every person (most are empty of course). Dikson (Диксон) is named after a Scottish-Swedish merchant, Oscar Dickson, who sponsored an expedition to the region in 1875. It's located at 73.5°N, and 5 May, while we were there, was the first day of the summer that the sun didn't set.
