I drove out to the west side of the island, where there is a little
fishing village called Gjesvær with 120 people, about 20 minutes from
the main road. According to the Norwegian Wikipedia, it is known to
date back to the Viking times, being mentioned in one of the old Norse
stories, but like many places in Finnmark, all the buildings were
burnt down in 1944 during the German occupation. The first photos are
from the main road, near where you turn off to Gjesvær. |

A thawing lake on the way. Despite the water on top, the ice was
still pretty thick; there was one person out fishing on
it. |
