Nordkapp, which just means North Cape in Norwegian, is a tourist
attraction that markets itself as the northernmost point in Europe.
Two problems: 1. It's actually on an island, so the northernmost point
on mainland Europe is farther east, and a little south, and 2. It's
not the northernmost point on the island either, that's a couple miles
west and slightly to the north, as you can see in the map. It is
about 160 km (100 miles) north of Tromsų, and about as close to the
North Pole as to Berlin. I got there when the tourist part hadn't
opened yet, so I avoided the 200 kroner ($30) entrance fee.

The entrance gates, where you would pay the admission fee. They
look kind of out of place half snowed in. |
