Another view from Badwater. The weather station at Death Valley is about 18 miles north of and 90 feet higher than Badwater, at Furnace Creek. It was there in 1913 the highest temperature recorded in the US (world at the time) was measured (134°F, 57°C). The world record high temperature is 136°F (58°C) and was recorded in Azizia, Libya, in 1922. Despite this record, Badwater may well be the hottest place on Earth. A weather station was maintained there for one year, during which it was consistently several degrees warmer at Badwater than at Furnace Creek. It is believed that when it was 134°F at Furnace Creek, it may have been over 140°F at Badwater.
