The ship tied to a floe for one of the drifting stations. The word on
the side of the ship, Kystvakt, is Norwegian for Coast Guard, and is
the source of the KV in KV Svalbard.

The ship was tied to the floes by drilling a four-inch-diameter hole
about one meter into the ice, then putting a steel I beam, with a
shackle on one end, into the hole and then filling the hole up with
water, which froze the I beam in place. The ropes were then attached
to the shackles. When tied to the ice we weren't stationary, but were
drifting with the ice, which usually moved south at about 1 mph.
