Whenever we were working on the ice we had to have someone with a rifle watching for bears. Usually we had one of the officers from the Coast Guard who would volunteer to come out for the morning or afternoon with us. The chances of a bear actually sneaking up on us were pretty small though since there was always a watch from the bridge when people were on the ice. They would look out by eye and also with a heat-sensitive infrared camera, and warn us by radio if they saw a bear. So, sometimes the bear guard looked a little bored.

Here the captain of the ship (in the middle) came out to see how things were going. Most of the people on board were really interested in the work we were all doing.
