In addition to our sea ice work, there was biology and oceanography
going on on board as well. In this first photo the orange things are
buoys attached to nets the biologists have put over the edge of the
ice to collect the small animals living in the water.

Here the oceanographers are lowering one of their instruments into the water. With this they collect samples of the water and temperature and salinity information down to 3000 meters (10,000 feet).
